红牛饮料因成分问题遭下架

Red bull energy drinks are consumed by many people in China to boost their energy. But a new controversy regarding its ingredients has sparked concern among consumers. Supermarkets in several major cities have already pulled the drinks off the shelves on safety grounds.

Local media in Harbin says that some of the beverage’s added ingredients are not registered with the State Food and Drug Administration.
哈尔滨当地的媒体称，这种饮料的一些添加成分没有向食品药品监督管理局注册。

It is reported that one of the ingredients, sodium benzoate, added as a preservative, may produce a dangerous substance when combined with caffeine. How dangerous? It’s considered an A-class drug for psychiatric treatment.
据报道，成分之一的苯甲酸钠作为一种防腐剂添加，它与咖啡因结合时，可能产生一种危险物质。有多危险？它被认为是国家一类精神药品。

The scare has soon spread. Supermarkets in major Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai, have pulled the drinks out of safety concerns. In a supermarket in downtown Shanghai, the shelves for red bull are now filled by other drinks.

A supermarket worker in Shanghai said, "We received the notice on Wednesday to pull them off the shelf, and we returned all the remaining drinks on Thursday."

But red bull drinks still can be found at smaller vendors around the city. Some vendors say they are not sure what to do.

Red Bull posted a statement on its website on Friday, insisting that its products are "safe" and "free of any banned additives".

Wang Rui, general manager of Red Bull, said, "National standards only require us to mark the main ingredients added in the drink, not every ingredient added. All the ingredients are allowed to be added."

But it seems too late to ease public concern. Some experts say further laboratory tests will be needed to verify the ingredients of Red Bull. The SFDA and its provincial bureaus have launched an investigation on this issue.
