The Federation for Disabled in Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province, has a strong commitment to setting up recreational and sports centers for the disabled. The centers organize activities and provide a number of services.

This is a recreational and sports center for the disabled in Gongshu district of Hangzhou City. 26-year-old Shi Jiangyue lost his sight three years ago, when his retina detached. He comes here often to read and enjoy himself.

Shi Jiangyue said, "I usually come here to read articles, browse the news and listen to music. They have a comprehensive selection, even operas."

The reading is actually done aloud by a computer. Every computer in the reading room is equipped with special software.

Shi said, "Following the audio guidance of the reading software, I can easily find the web page. Here’s the menu, and music link and then enter..."

Since the recreational and sports centre was set up, it’s become a gathering place for the blind and other people with disabilities in the community.

Shi said, "Every time the center organizes performances, they call first and then pick us up. When the performances are over, they escort us home."

The center also provides training programs for specialized skills. Sheng Bingrong is one of those who’s benefited. He’s now a senior masseur. He comes to the center every week and meet friends there when his own practice has no clients. .

Sheng Bingrong said, "Life now is relatively easy. The massage business is indoors, so doesn't affected by the wether."

So far Hangzhou has set up 900 rehabilitation centres in most of its counties and communities, providing services for over 60,000 people.
