变废为宝:贵阳市的垃圾分类
In China, two-thirds of the cities are facing problems with garbage pile-up. As the pressure grows, many are calling more recycling. CCTV reporter Shi Wenjing takes a look at how one man’s trash is another man's treasure in one community in Guiyang, capital of southwestern Guizhou province.
For residents in Zhenhua community, garbage means money. A company started a waste sorting pilot program a month ago. But it took some time to educate the residents, as many were unfamiliar with the concept.
Xu Dengqun, Zhenhua Community resident, said, "We used to put all the garbage together and throw it away in a large plastic bag. At first, we have no idea about sorting."
The pilot program now covers more than 80-percent of the households.
Xu Xinye, staff, Waste Sorting Co., said, "About 90-percent of the residents in this community didn’t know about waste sorting. Some of them had the idea of recycling, but there were no facilities in the community. After we set up our site here, we’ve been providing free garbage bags to the members. The different colors indicate the type of garbage."
With the help of the staff, more and more residents are getting used to the new way of dealing with trash. Sorting garbage by bag color helps them promote green recycling and make a little money.
Xu Dengqun, Zhenhua Community resident, said, "This is the waste sorting member card. This number is your account. The company comes to collect the garbage once a day. You get credits on the card for sorting. Last month, I got ten yuan for ten credits."
After checking, weighing and registering, the garbage bags are separated into three categories to make the next step easier.
Recycling can also help lower property costs, where a lot of money used to go into the landfill. Getting people involved and showing them the benefits is making the waste sorting service popular. But this is just one community. Spreading the practice nationwide has a long way to go.
