用北极的方式来庆祝新年
For people living inside the Arctic Circle, the first day of the New Year is 24 hours of darkness. Now let’s head to the Russian city of Murmansk and chill out in the white night with the locals.
From early December to mid January, Murmansk spends 40 days in the dark.
But that doesn’t dampen enthusiasm for the New Year.
People in Russia get a whole week for their new year holiday. That means the shopping frenzy lasts until late night on New Year’s Eve.
Champagne and candy are musts. The banquet spread is mainly salads, desserts and cold dishes.
"Because there’s no sunlight for many days, we have to eat more dishes high in fat like fish and meat to stay healthy. We also need fruit and vegetables, and of course we need to do sport.
The only hot dish at the banquet is pancakes. They’re filled with meat or jam.
Santa Claus, is usually a role played by the father of the family, and he gives out presents to all the children. Then the whole family gathers around the television to wait for the new year bell to ring.
On New Year’s Day, people head to the plaza for skating or horse-riding. Although it still seems like night, they’re all wide awake.
