Hong Kong star Stephen Chow has recently been chosen as a member of a provincial committee of the political advisory body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, in Guandong Province. While some have questioned his credentials, many seem pretty positive about his new role.

Some ask: "He’s so busy, can he become a good advisor? Will he just be an eye candy?"

When the famous comedy actor suddenly turned into a political advisor, Steven Chow fans answered the question with lines from the star’s own movies.

Many netizens say Chow’s publicity will give him a stronger say in the political arena.

But some argue what determines a good political advisor is his policy agenda.

And Chow’s response: I made a wish when I was little, I want to be a good government official. When I grew up, I came to know being a good official is not easy.

Not all are convinced.

One said: "What do celebrities know about politics? Movie stars should stick with entertaining the public." Another said: "What is the purpose? Is it for them to increase media attention?"

Chow’s agent responded in saying Chow feels honored to be chosen. He is not only a director-cum-actor, but also is interested in politics.

Chow’s five year tenure will begin in January next year. After then, he will be judged by his deeds.
