尼日利亚的富人引来外国品牌

In Africa, an increasing number of multi-national companies are blossoming in Nigeria. Clothing companies and fast food chains are among the first to invest in the country where a growing middle class now has money to spend.

Inside this 1950s-style American diner, waitresses sing along to Aretha Franklin as they sling burgers and whip up milkshakes. But this is actually in Nigeria.

As the middle class continues to grow here, so has the appetite for foreign brands.

Christopher Nahman, managing director of Johnny Rockets, said, "I mean, now you look around you have Johnny Rockets, you have KFC, Dominos, ColdStone. I know for a fact that other brands are coming. Even the clothing, there is actually retail a retail market now in Nigeria before there wasn’t."

And many of these brands are catering to native taste buds. Johnny Rockets offers the Nigerian version of jollof rice, a spicy staple throughout the country.

Customer Ralita Shonariwo said, "Well I’m a foodie, I love food. I was just driving past this morning and I saw it (Johnny Rockets) so I called my sister and said, ’we have to come try this out’. And here we are, having lunch."

But these "exotic" flavors come at a steep price. A double bacon cheeseburger sells for 3,500 naira, the equivalent of about 22 US dollars. A vanilla milkshake? 1,800 naira, more than 11 bucks.

Nevertheless, many remain undeterred by the prices. For them, the opportunity to experience something different is well worth the money.
