People in Hong Kong have a chance to admire the ancient history of their country in an exhibition of the royal costumes of the Qing Dynasty. This is the first time that the public are getting to see some of the costumes worn by the emperor.

This is the royal fashion in China’s Qing Dynasty, but still fascinating after hundreds of years.

“The Splendours of Royal Costume”, an exhibition of Qing Court Attire, features more than 130 valuable pieces selected from Beijing’s Palace Museum. Nearly a third of them are debuting to the public.

"The importance of displaying gives people a chance to look back at the cultures of the past. The present exhibition provides an excellent opportunity for the public to appreciate diverse perspectives of the court attire of the Qing dynasty and its cultural aspects." said Susanna Sui, Chief curator of Hong Kong Museum of History.

Qing royal garments were exquisitely woven and adorned with silk and other textiles. Every piece is a beautiful work of art.

The garments not only display the highest standard of weaving and embroidery in the Qing Dynasty, but also manifest the lifestyle of the glorious past.

The emperor wore a different color with decorative motifs to suit different occasions. Emperor Qianlong wore this deep red robe for festive occasions, and Emperor Jiaqing wore the lined blue one for sacrificial events. This is the first time these two pieces are shown to the public.

Multimedia displays take visitors through the clothes for different seasons, and even how to make a new robe for the emperor.
