Ash spewing from volcanoes has led to the closure of five airports across Indonesia, leaving many travellers stranded on the eve of the Muslim Eid holiday. 

These include the international airport serving Surabaya, the country's biggest city after capital Jakarta. The closures come after the eruption of Mount Raung on the main island of Java on Thursday. Millions of Muslims have been impacted, as they travel for family reunions during the holiday.

The country's transport ministry says the Surabaya airport will hopefully open later today. The airports at Jember and Banyuwangi on Java, close to the erupting volcano, could stay closed even longer. There was no immediate indication when the airport on Ternate might reopen.
