Hong Kong is believed to be the most superstitious city in China. With more than 10,000 masters, or ‘geomancers’, now practicing their craft, one can feel the power of feng shui everywhere in the city as believers seek to create harmony between humans and the natural environments. The Wall Street Journal recently noted on how companies consult feng shui masters to determine dates for deals and strive to create an environment that will welcome good fortune.
Here in Hong Kong, two bronze lions guard the entrance of HSBC’s Main Building in Central. They are iconic, but more so designed to protect the institution’s finances, say feng shui experts.
Even at Hong Kong Disneyland—the orientation of its front entrance had to be skewed by 12 degrees, on the advice of a feng shui master that it would bring prosperity to the park.
In a city considered to be one of the world’s premiere financial hubs, and known to be blessed with good feng shui—nothing is left to chance. Companies—big and small —consult feng shui experts to ensure they get the most out of their fortunes.
Even investment bank CLSA has come up with its Feng Shui Index, a tongue-in-cheek report offering predictions on how the Hang Seng Index will perform.
And while some are quick to dismiss feng shui as mere superstition, the ancient art has become an important part of modern Hong Kong culture—and business decisions. In fact, demand for feng shui services has gone up, as more and more international firms recognize the importance of working in harmony with their surroundings.
Consultant Raymond Lo, who has advised clients such as Peninsula Hotel and Dolce & Gabbana, says feng shui has become an important part for anyone who wants make money in Hong Kong.
"Today the trend is more and more people realize the importance of feng shui for enhancing prosperity and well-being. A lot of architects is now coming to study feng shui because the demand come from the customers. Not only they have to decide the building comfortably but they also want to get feng shui accreditation for their building" Lo said.
For strategist Sam Chi Yung, feng shui has become indispensable to his work. He has in fact devised a means to enhance his clients’ equity returns through it.
"Like today, I asked them to make buy position before say in the morning, and after that the market may fluctuate and you may try to make some short position in the afternoon," Yung said.
As more and more consult their stars first before they leap, the business of geomancy is likely to harness more fortunes for consultants in a city that lives and breathes on feng shui.
