Thousands of people took to the streets of Japan Sunday to protests against controversial security bills that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants to pass during the current Diet session.
In response to a call by a students group, protesters gathered in more than 60 locations.
Japan's Kyodo news agency reports that in Tokyo alone about 6,500 protesters gathered and marched toward a popular shopping district, chanting "No war" and "No change in the law."
The bills that they oppose would allow the military to fight abroad for the first time since World War II.
The bills have already passed the lower chamber of the Diet and are being debated in the country's Upper House.
