Russian athletes will not able to compete at Rio Paralympics. The country was given a ban by the International Paralympic Committee, which they appealled.

And that legal proceeding has not gone their way as the Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld that original ruling, meaning Russian Paralympians will not be competing in Rio.

The tribunal in Switzerland heard the case and felt the decision to exclude the team was justified, and stated so in a release validating their decision.

Russia has been embroiled in a doping scandal, but despite that, the country avoided a blanket ban at the just finished Games, with most of its athletes participating, the exceptions being their track and field, and weightlifting squads. Its team has just arrived home from Rio, finishing fourth in the Olympic medal table.

An appeal by Russia's Paralympic committee to Switzerland's federal court is possible, though unlikely before the Paralympics, and the lawyer representing the Russian squad believes his clients have not been given a fair trial.

"Athletes, the Paralympians were denied the right to present arguments and proof of their cleanness, despite the fact they were checked by all possible anti-doping laboratories," said Alexei Karpenko, Russian lawyer.

"The para-athletes were deprived of their fundamental rights, the right to compete in sport, the right of an occupation, the right of non-discrimination. All these rights are affirmed in the UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities. All these rights were abused today."
