■ more and more
1. 表示“越来越多的”,用于修饰名词。如:
More and more people began to move to the city. 越来越多的人向城市搬迁。

2. 表示“越来越……”,用于修饰形容词、副词、动词、介词短语等。如:
It’s becoming more and more difficult to find a job. 找工作越来越困难了。

She’s growing to be more and more like her mother. 她长得越来越像她妈。
注:有时用的可能是普通的比较级形式。如:

■ more or less
1. 表示“或多或少”“在一定程度上”“大体上”。如:
The job’s more or less finished. 这项工作差不多完成了。

2. 表示“大约”“左右”。如:
The repairs will cost $50, more or less. 修理费大约要50美元。

3. 表示“一点也不”,用于否定句。如:
I don’t like it, more or less. 我一点也不喜欢。

■ no more than
主要用于强调数量之少或程度之低,其意为“仅仅”“只有”“只不过”。如:
I have no more than five yuan in my pocket. 我口袋里的钱只不过五元。
This test takes no more than thirty minutes. 这个测验需时不超过30分钟。
The pub was no more than half full. 该酒吧的上座率最多不超过五成。
注:有时比较级不是more,而是其他形式的比较级。一般说来,no+比较级+than=as +与比较级意义相反的形容词的原形+as。如:

Their house is no bigger than ours. 他们的房子跟我们的一样不大。
She looks no older than her daughter. 她看起来跟她女儿一样不老。
■ no more...than
用于两者比较,并且否定两者,其意为“不……也不”“同……一样不”。如:
She’s no more a great singer than I am. 我不是优秀歌手,她也不是。
Tom is no more rich than Jack is. 杰克不是有钱人,汤姆也不是。
I know no more Spanish than I know Greek. 我对西班牙语和希腊语同样都不懂。
He is no more an artist than you are a mathematician. 就像你不是数学家一样,他也不是艺术家。
■ what’s more
用于引出更重要的信息,其意为“更重要的”“更有甚者”“而且”。如:
He’s dirty, and what’s more he smells. 他很脏,身上还有味儿呢。
They are going to get married, and what’s more they are setting up in business together. 他们就要结婚了,而且还要一起做生意呢。
She says we could use her car, and what’s more, she’ll pay for the petrol. 她说我们可以用她的车,而且她还愿付汽油费。
