形容词bad的六条值得注意的用法

1. 除表示“坏的”之外,还有不少引申用法,如表示“有害的”“糟糕的”“严重的”“腐烂的”等。如:

Smoking is bad for your health. 抽烟有害健康。

I had a bad cold. That’s why I didn’t come. 我重感冒了,因此我没来。

I’m afraid he’s made a bad mistake. 我恐怕他犯了一个严重的错误。

He had some bad fish. As a result, he felt ill. 他吃了些变质的鱼,结果感到不舒服。

2. 比较等级变化不规则,分别为worse和worst。如:

Today’s weather is worse than yesterday’s. 今天的天气比昨天差。

She is the worst singer I know. 她是我知道的最差的歌手。

3. feel bad (about)为惯用表达,其意不是“感觉很坏”,而是“(对……)感到难过或内疚”。如:

He felt bad about leaving without saying goodbye. 他对自己不辞而别感到内疚。

4. the bad可用作名词,指“坏人”,表复数意义。如:

We can’t ever be sure that the bad will be punished. 我们永远不能肯定坏人一定会受到惩罚。

5. 表示“变坏”“变质”,要说go bad,不用come bad。如:

The fish has gone bad. 这条鱼已变质了。(www.hxen.net)

You know, if the goods are outdated, they will also go bad. 你知道,如果货物过期,也会变质。

go from bad to worse为习语,意为“越来越坏”“每况愈下”。如:

The service in this hotel goes from bad to worse. 这个旅店的服务每况愈下。

We were hoping for an improvement but things have gone from bad to worse. 我们但愿有所改善,然而事情却每况愈下。

6. make matters [things] worse为英语惯用表达,其意为“更糟的是”,通常用作独立成分。如:

To make matters worse, he refused to apologize. 更糟的是,他拒不道歉。

To make things worse, it started to snow when evening came. 更糟糕的是,夜幕降临时,天开始下起雪来了。

有时也可直接用于句中,表示“将困难情况弄得更糟”。如:

Her attempts to calm them down only made matters worse. 她设法使他们平静下来,不想却适得其反。
