Water Polo Day 2: Easy wins for Australia and Chinese national team

(BEIJING, Mar. 19) -- The Chinese national team and Australia won their first victories comfortably against Shanghai and Guangdong Derun, respectively, on the second day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Water Polo China Open.

In the match against Guangdong Derun, Australia showed overwhelming superiority and took a 6-0 lead in the first period. In the second period, Guangdong Derun took the opportunity to score two goals but still had a long way to catch up to the 11 goals by Australia.

In the next half, Australia slowed their pace down, and Guangdong Derun seized the chance to score twice. In the end, Australia outplayed Guangdong Derun 18-5.

In the competition between the Chinese national team and Shanghai, the national team kept the lead throughout the first three periods 4-0, 8-2 and 10-3 and won the game 14-5.

Since many players were assigned to the Chinese national team, the strength of local teams was affected to some extent and they had trouble against stronger contingents. However, the 2008 China Open gave them a precious opportunity to compete with powerful teams and gain experience.
