1. Throw one's weight on/ around 施加影响，仗势欺人

The Senator had to throw his weight around to get the new law passed.
参议员不得不施加影响，好让法案通过。

释义：

weight：体重，引申为权势，影响力。

throw one's weight on：把某人的全部体重压在另一人的身上，谁都会苦不堪言。

2. Thumbs-down 反对，责备

Allof us turned thumbs down on his suggestion.
我们全部都对他的建议表示反对。

释义：源于古罗马的竞技场。战败的角斗士的生死完全掌握在国王手中。如果国王对他的表现还满意，就把拇指朝上，免他一死；如果不满意，就把拇指朝下，当即处死。
