Because these young women look perfect, we think their lives must be perfect, too. But having seen many of these women close to, I would not want to be them. I can't tell you how many models I've seen arrive on set bruised from being beaten up by their boyfriends. They have everything, and nothing. Many models have learned to inject drugs between their toes, the only place that won't infuriate the stylist.

As well as being burdened by beauty, models are often hopelessly naive and under-educated: they embark on careers while still children.

I had a letter from a father the other day. He told me his daughter is 13 and is always being approached by scouts from the big agencies. 'Should I let her model? She would be able to see the world, be independent, wear nice clothes, it could be a nice hobby until she decides what she wants to do.'

I told this father what I tell all parents: make sure she gets an education first, tell her to wait until she is 18 and then do your level best to talk her out of it.
