Police in the US state of Texas say five people have been killed and 21 injured during a mass-shooting spree in the city of Odessa. The say the suspect, a white male in his mid-30s, has been killed in a shootout with police. Authorities believe initial reports of more than one shooter arose when a mail van was hijacked by the suspect, after he shot a policeman who pulled his car over at a routine traffic stop. Health officials have confirmed one of the victims in the hospital is under the age of two.

Protesters have clashed with police in Hong Kong in the 13th consecutive weekend of anti-government and anti-police demonstrations in the city. They threw petrol bombs at government headquarters and set fires in the streets, while police used tear gas and water cannons. Police had denied permission for yesterday's march but tens of thousands of people defied the ban.
The racing industry is in shock after the death of another female jockey in just two days. 32-year-old Melanie Tyndall has died after falling from her horse at a Darwin racetrack. It comes after apprentice jockey Mikaela Claridge died at a Melbourne racecourse.
And Melbourne has secured the NRL minor premiership with one round left to play, beating Manly 36 points to six.
