Tug boats pulled the Chinese cargo ship carrying more than 9,000 containers into the expanded locks of the Panama Canal. About 30,000 people attended the event, marking the end of the construction that began almost a decade ago and finished nearly two years late. The expansion doubles the capacity of the shipping route.
A senior Iraqi commander says the city of Fallujah has been “fully liberated” from Islamic State militants. This follows a more than month long military operation. The Iraqi army was backed by U.S.-led airstrikes and paramilitary troops made up of mostly Shiite militias.
Pope Francis wraps up his trip to Armenia with a liturgy at the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral. The cathedral was the seed of the Oriental Orthodox church in Armenia, the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion.
