A ceasefire to evacuate rebels and civilians from Aleppo unraveled on Wednesday. Syrian activists said that fighter jets had resumed bombing in the eastern part of the city. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad scoffed at the idea of a ceasefire, saying it was designed to stop his government's advance in this city.

The Federal Reserve raised a key interest rate in response to a strengthening U.S. economy, with three more rate hikes expected in 2017. Fed Chair Janet Yellen made the announcement in Washington. The move will mean modestly higher rates on some loans.

President-elect Donald Trump met with a group of tech experts at Trump Tower in New York, telling them he's "here to help you folks do well." Many in Silicon Valley had expressed concerns that Trump's policies could stifle innovation and compromise digital privacy.

Soccer fans in Istanbul gathered at the stadium where suicide bombings killed 44 people on Saturday for the first match since the attack. A Turkey-based Kurdish militant group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
