The White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has resigned, reportedly in protest at an organizational shakeup. Speaking later on US television, Mr. Spicer said that although the President didn't want him to go, he felt that would be, as he put it, "too many cooks in a kitchen".

The Palestinian President has suspended all official contacts with Israel as the crisis grows over additional security measures in the old city of Jerusalem. Three Palestinians and three Israelis had been killed in ensuing violence.

Venezuela's Supreme Court has accused the opposition-controlled National Assembly of betrayal after it appointed 13 new judges to the court. The Assembly says it has the right to name and fire justices under the constitution, but the court said the move was illegal.

The Philippine Congress is holding a special session to vote on President Duterte's request to extend martial law in the southern island of Mindanao until the end of the year. The army has been fighting Islamic militants in the city of Marawi since May. Mr. Duterte's critics warn he is planning a wider power gap.

Poland's Senate has backed an overhaul of the Supreme Court despite huge street protests and international warnings about the independence of judiciary. The legislation paves the way for all Supreme Court judges to be removed and replaced.

People are voting in East Timor which gained independence from Indonesia 15 years ago. The government has been widely accused of failing to use oil and gas wealth to create jobs.

A police chief in the US state of Minnesota, Janee Harteau, has resigned after one of her officers fatally shot an unarmed Australian woman. The death of Justine Damond has provoked outrage.

Amateur drone pilots in Britain will have to sit a flight safety test under new government rules. It's in response to worries about a growing number of near misses with passenger aircraft.
