BBC在线收听下载:特朗普言语攻击四名民主党女议员
Hello, I'm Chris Barrow with the BBC news.
The four Democratic congresswomen accused by President Trump of being anti-American have dismissed his attack as a racist distraction from his failing policies. Mr. Trump repeated his criticism of the non-white women on Monday, saying that if they weren't happy, they could leave America. Nick Bryant reports from Washington.
Appearing alongside her three colleagues, Ilhan Omar, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, accused Mr. Trump of launching a blatantly racist attack. The Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pledged to introduce a resolution condemning the president's language. More than a dozen Republicans have criticized his remarks, including Tim Scott, the Party's only African American senator. But crucially, there's been no rebuke from the Party's leadership on Capitol Hill. This is fast becoming an election defining clash, exposing what's always being the angriest fault line in American politics—race.
The UN refugee agency has said it's "deeply concerned" about a new asylum rule coming into force in the United States. It will deny people from central America the rights to claim asylum in the US if they've already passed through another country without applying. The UN says the measure isn't in line with international obligations. Will Grant has more details.
If people do not apply on their way through a country towards the United States, it makes them ineligible for asylum there. That is a huge step. If you're coming from Honduras, if you're coming from Guatemala or El Salvador, you are passing through Mexico first. The suggestion is that you must apply their first and if they're not fails, then you'll be able to apply in the United States. It'll make it essentially impossible for central Americans to make it into the United States through legal means and not just central Americans, of course.
Pakistan has fully reopened its airspace to civilian flights nearly five months after it was closed during a dispute with India. The closure is thought to have cost Indian airlines tens of millions of dollars with companies forced to reroute flights. A forest fire in Croatia has forced the evacuation of hundreds of revelers from a beach-side nightclub. Video on social media showed flames and large clouds of smoke close to a venue used by the Fresh Island music festival. Police closed the nearby road, preventing many festival goers from returning to their hotels on the Island of Pag.
The retrial has begun in El Salvador of a woman charged with aggravated homicide under the country's strict anti-abortion laws. Two years ago, Evelyn Hernandez was sentenced to thirty years in jail, but was released following an appeal. At the start of her new trial, she's reaffirmed her innocence, saying she suffered a miscarriage after being raped as a teenager.
