President Trump says an Iranian military drone has been shot down by a US warship in the Gulf. Mr. Trump said the unmanned aircraft came within a thousand meters after the USS boxer in the Strait of Hormuz threatening the safety of its crew. Tensions have been rising since the US began enforcing sanctions against the Iranian oil industry in May.

Mr. Trump has meanwhile sought to distance himself from racist chant aimed at the Somali-born congresswoman Ilhan Omar during his election rally in North Carolina on Wednesday. He said he wasn’t happy about people shouting “Send Her Back” and started speaking very quickly to try to intervene. TV footage shows he paused when the chant erupted.

South African soldiers have started patrols in the suburbs of Cape Town following a recent surge in gun violence there. Troops are reinforcing police in the Cape Flats area where the murder rate has spiked. 40 people were killed there last weekend.

The newly elected President of the European Commission has repeated that she is willing to grant Britain another extension to Brexit talks if London comes up with good reasons. Ursula von der Leyen said both sides must try to avoid the negative consequences of a no-deal departure from EU.

Two Iranian ships have been stranded for weeks in a Brazilian port due to a lack of fuel. Brazil’s oil company Petrobras has refused to sell them oil because of US sanctions. The vessels brought petrochemicals to Brazil early this year and were due to load corn before returning to Iran.

The aircraft maker Boeing has said its second quarter profits will be hit by nearly 5-billion-dollar charge related to the grounding of 737 Max plane after two deadly crashes.
