Police in Russia have detained several opposition activists and carried out searches ahead of a planned unauthorized protest about the exclusion of candidates for Moscow city elections. About thirty candidates were barred by the authorities who say they failed to collect enough valid signatures to stand in the September poll. Those concerned reject the allegation.
The Romanian Interior Minister has sacked the chief of police after the murder of a kidnapped teenage girl who was killed despite having managed to make several emergency calls. Relatives of the fifteen-year-old, named only as Alexandra, alleged the police failed to take her frantic pleas seriously. Danny Eberhardt reports. The scandal has convulsed Romania. President Klaus Iohannis said he was outraged and has demanded a full investigation. Police say Alexandra was kidnapped on Wednesday when trying to hitchhike to her home village near the southern town of Caracal. She got three calls through to the emergency services giving clues as to where she was being held. It took police twelve hours to find the house. They then lost vital time applying for a search warrant that wasn't needed and wait until dawn before entering. Inside, they found human remains. A sixty-five-year-old mechanic arrested at the property is being questioned.
Bahrain has executed two men sentenced to death for terrorism despite urgent calls from the UN to hold the executions. The two men were Shia activists accused of killing a policeman, but Amnesty International and other rights groups say there's evidence that they were tortured into confessing. Sebastian Usher reports. Despite a last-minute call for clemency from UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, Bahrain executed the two men out of their families had been summoned for a final visit. Ali al-Arab and Ahmed al-Malali was sentenced to death last year in a mass trial of almost sixty men accused of terrorism. They were convicted of killing a police officer in 2017. The Bahraini authorities say they are protecting national security from Iranian-backed militants from the majority Shia community.
A big rescue operation is underway near the Indian city of Mumbai where an express train carrying hundreds of passengers has been stranded by incessant rain. Dangerous water levels trapped the train near Vangani on Friday night. Passengers say they've been left with no food or drinking water. The government has sent in army helicopters and navy vessels to help ferry people to safety.
The penultimate stage of the Tour de France cycle race will be shorted again today because of bad weather. Friday's race was brought to a dramatic early end by a hailstorm and landslide about twenty kilometers from the finish.
