A Taliban bomb attack has hit a hospital in southern Afghanistan, killing at least 20 people. The militants said an Afghan intelligence services building had been the target. Elsewhere at least 9 people had been killed in an air strike in the eastern Nangahar.

The leader of Israel’s centralist Blue and White Alliance Benny Gantz says he wants to form a unity government led by him, in effect, rejecting a power sharing offer by Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr. Gantz rebuffed Mr. Netanyahu’s proposal of a joint unity administration with his Likud party, calling it spin. Neither side has won enough seats for a majority after Tuesday’s election.

Japanese residents affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster 8 years ago have called for an appeal of court verdict which cleared three power company executives of negligence. Earlier, the court said the executives couldn’t have foreseen the scale of the earthquake and the tsunami that hit the power plant.

The international economic body, the OECD, says the world economy is growing at its slowest rate since the financial crisis more than a decade ago. It says the trade war between China and the United States is a major factor.

France has jointed Finland in urging the British government to come up with fresh Brexit proposals in writing by the end of the month. The French Presidency warned that otherwise there will not be enough time to consider the plans before a crucial EU Summit in October.

Polio has re-emerged in the Philippines nearly 2 decades after the incurable disease was declared eradicated. A three-year-old girl was found to have contracted the illness and the virus has been detected in the capital Manila and the city of Davao.

And Ethiopia has rejected an Egyptian proposal on how to operate a hydroelectric dam on the river Nile. Egypt relies on the Nile for its fresh water and it worries that the new dam will starve it of its resources.
