In return, the U.S. freed an Iranian scientist Massoud Soleimani.

More than 100 former members of the Jihadist group Boko Haram have graduated from a three-year UN backed deradicalization program in the southeast of Niger. The men and women swore an oath of allegiance to the authorities.

Malta's embattled Prime Minister Joseph Moscat has had a private meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, despite demands for it be called off. Mr.Moscat has been accused of obstructing the police inquiry into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. He denies wrongdoing.

Air strikes on rebel-held territory in the Syrian province of Idlib are reported to have killed 20 people including eight children. The British-based Syrian observatory for human rights said nine of the deaths were in the village of Balyoun where a market was hit.

The Pacific island chain of Bougainville has ended two weeks of voting in a historical two-week referendum on independence from Papua New Guinea. The 200,000 registered voters are widely expected to back proposals for Bougainville to become the world's newest nation.
