Pope Francis is introducing far-reaching changes to the way the Rome Catholic Church deals with child sexual abuse. He is ending the rule of pontifical secrecy that is obliged to anyone bringing accusations of abuse against priests to keep quite about the details. 

The Supreme Court in Poland has warned that a bill that would make it easier for the government to sack judges violates European Union law and might trigger the country's departure from the EU. The European Commission spokesman said a country's judiciary must be protected from interference.

The Republican leader in the U.S senate , has rejected a request from democrats that White House officials be called to testify in any impeachment trial of President Trump. Meanwhile, Mr.Trump said if the House of Representatives decided to pursue the impeachment against him, it would be declaring a war on American democracy.

Rick Gates, who served as Deputy Chairman of President Trump's 2016 election campaign has been sentenced to 45 days in prison and three years of probation for fraud and lying to investigators. Mr.Gates was one of the six associates with Mr.Trump, who was charged in the investigation into Russian interference in the election but cooperated with prosecutors.

China's first domestically built aircraft carrier is now in service. It will operate from Hainan in the South China Sea, where China has maritime claims.

The French Chief of Staff has warned about the future of Africa's Sahel. General François Lecointre said if chaos was allowed to take root, the Islamic State group would fill the void. 

A report into the ballet academy, the Vienna State Opera, has accused it of endangering the welfare of children who study there. It says students have been encouraged to smoke to control their weight and been exposed to overburden some routines and training rehearsals and performances.
