Hello, this is David Austin with the BBC News.

India Supreme Court has refused to suspend a citizenship law that's provoked protests across the country. The legislation enables faster access to citizenship for non-Muslim refugees from three neighboring countries. Judges are considering a number of petitions against the law. From Delhi, here's Anbarasan Ethirajan.

The Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has promised to implement the law despite the unrest. The law has triggered uNPRecedented protests in the Indian capital Delhi and across the country, with critics saying the law discriminates on the basis of religion. In the meantime, police in Delhi have imposed an emergency order banning large gathering in parts of the city after 12 police officers were injured in a protest on Tuesday. Police say they fired tear gas after thousands of protesters threw stones and set fire to vehicles in some Muslim-dominated areas in the northeast part of the city.

Australia is sweltering under record temperatures, with preliminary data showing it endured its hottest average daily high of 40.9 degree Celsius on Tuesday. The heat is expected to intensify over the next few days as the air mass moves across the country towards its more populated eastern seaboard. The record comes as Australia battles severe drought and a huge bushfire crisis, the scientist has linked it to global warming. Jamie Hanson is head of campaigns for Greenpeace Australia Pacific.

We need to phase out coal mining in Australia. And we need to phase out coal fire power stations and we need to start making a really constructive attempt to work with our global partners to fix the climate crisis.

Extensive interviews in Haiti by a team of researchers from a British university have revealed that UN peacekeepers fathered hundreds of babies there before abandoning their young mothers to lives of poverty. The report was published in the academic journal International Peacekeeping. Here is Sanjay Dasgupta.

The report says the problem was so widespread that these children of absent fathers had a local name, Petit Minustah, after the acronym for the UN mission to Haiti. Researchers note instances of girls as young as 11 being forced to trade sex for food or for a few coins as they struggled to cope with the devastation caused by riots, cyclones and earthquakes. They were then left to raise their children alone and in misery. Following the publication of the report, a spokeswoman for UN Peacekeeping has condemned the behaviour of some peacekeepers in Haiti and said the UN was working towards tackling the issue globally.

The Italian American company Fiat Chrysler and the French PSA group that owns Peugeot and Citroen have confirmed a merger that would create the world's 4th largest carmaker. The new company will have a market value of about $50 billion. The pair hope the merger will cut costs and allow resources to be pooled for the development of electric vehicles.
