Here in New York City, the navy is commemorating the September 11th attacks by commissioning a ship built from the remains of the twin towers. NBC's Kevin Tibbles has more on the proud ship that will always be a special part of history.
"Man our ship and bring her to life." Today in the city for which it is named the USS New York came to life. "The strongest steel in New York has always been in the spines of its people." Even though the massive amphibious assault ship is new, it will carry vital history with it into every port of call. The bow was constructed with 7.5 tons of steel recovered from the fell twin towers of the World Trade Center.
The bow is what gives that ship direction and there's nothing more symbolic, I believe, than to have the steel from the Trade Center in the bow leading the ship into the future.
Earlier in the week, the billion-dollar vessel built in Louisiana made its way up to Hudson river, pausing near Ground Zero for a 21-gun salute, with some 1000 sailors and marines standing at attention. Crew member petty officer first class Sharif Taubert of New Jersey still recalls visiting the World Trade Center as a child. We would go up to the top floor, lean our heads on the windows and act as if we were flying.
Taubert is an IT specialist aboard this floating high-tech giant capable of quickly transporting an expeditionary unit of 700 marines and all their equipment around the world. It definitely makes me very proud to serve my country. And for those onboard serving in the 21st century navy comes with a 21st century galley, a state of the art gym and a flight deck wrestling with the latest military hardware. And all on board are as proud as the ship's majestic namesake.
What more can you say, New York.
The USS New York will next make its way to north of Virginia where the crew will continue its training, preparing to deploy at a moment's notice when duty calls.
