丰田汽车召回事件影响"日本制造"

2010-02-08来源:和谐英语

There aren't many car companies that run their own theme park. But until recently, the world's biggest car maker had a lot to brag about. Each day, thousands come to be serenaded by Toyota's musical robot and wooed by the company's cutting-edge design and technology.

Here in Japan, Toyota means much more than just a motor company. It's the source of enormous pride, a national icon even. Toyota has almost half the Japanese market. There'll be no recalls in Japan since the company uses different part suppliers here, but there has been damage to a reputation built on the quality of its cars.

I couldn't believe this happened to Toyota. I was surprised to hear what happened, I have always trusted Toyotas.

For the past week, there has been silence from Toyota's Tokyo headquarters for an embattled management that in the last year has reported the company's first operating loss in the 70 years, thousands of job cuts and withdrawal from prestigious Formula one motor racing.

Analysts say quality has suffered because of a rush for growth and warned unless Toyota acts quickly and transparently, it could hit the broader reputation of Japanese exporters.

The stake is so huge for Toyota. So if Toyota has something wrong, that create a negative image to the major Japanese companies. Garage owner ** is keeping the faith, saying home-grown Toyotas are the most  reliable cars he services.

I understand that the American parts makers make the component. So in that sense, I wasn't too surprised.

But even in Japan, the global recall is testing the faith of some of Toyota’s most ardent followers.
