A Christian pastor in Florida, who said he would cancel his plans to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of 9-11, now says he may indeed go through with those plans. Earlier Thursday, Terry Jones, a fundamentalist Christian pastor, said he would cancel his planned Koran-burning because he reached a deal that involved relocating an Islamic cultural center scheduled to be built near Ground Zero in New York. But the Imam who Jones said had brokered the negotiations, Muhammad Musr,i denied that was the deal.
"What was offered from New York is a commitment term for a meeting, three-way meeting between myself , Pastor Jones, and Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf, to address the mosque, the so-called mosque at Ground Zero, that's center, that's being planned over there. And I communicated this to Pastor Jones, that Imam, and his staff were willing to meet with us and to consider his request to relocate the mosque."
Upon hearing that the Islamic center's location had no bearing on whether he cancelled his plans, Jones withdrew his earlier statement and said that he would in fact RETHINK Saturday's planned Koran-burning. Jones and his 50-person congregation in Florida had said they were planning to burn the Islamic holy book on the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks to send a message to Islamic extremists.
News of the plans have sparked outrage worldwide with dozens of demonstrations and some protesters saying they'll continue if the plans are carried out. Government officials including U.S. President Barack Obama along with top military and religious leaders have called on Jones not to carry out his plans.
