[11:53.43]was the scene of some of the most advanced political developments
[11:59.07]in the Western world in the late eighteenth century.
[12:04.11]From 1763 to 1791 the island had its Golden Age.
[12:11.77]As its richest colony,
[12:15.29]the island contributed more than 40% to the economy of France.
[12:21.77]Its success rested on the labour of half a million slaves.
