伊朗首次处决一名抗议者

Iran has announced the first execution of a protester convicted for his role in the ongoing wave of anti-government protests.

State media reported Thursday that Mohsen Shekari, who was 23, was hanged Thursday morning after being accused of blocking a street and attacking a security force member in Tehran.

Iranian courts have issued at least 10 death sentences for people arrested in connection with the protests, but Shekari was the first person executed.

Survivors of gun violence and family members of victims brought their activism to Washington D.C. Thursday pushing the U.S. Senate to pass an assault weapons ban.

Speaking to reporters, Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal said gun reform needs to be handled at the federal level.

"No state is protected unless all are protected because guns have no respect for state borders.

On Wednesday, President Biden called again for a ban on the so-called assault weapons as he spoke at a vigil honoring victims of gun violence.

He attended the event that took place nearly ten years after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

It was the first time a U.S. president has spoken at the yearly vigil.

Newly released court documents show the suspect in the Colorado Springs nightclub massacre did have weapons seized after a bomb threat incident last year.

There were questions about an incident in June of 2021 in which Anderson Aldrich allegedly threatened family members with a gun, telling the grandparents they would die that day and threatening the mother with a bombing at her home.

There were questions raised about why that case was dropped and whether it would have triggered Colorado's red flag law that allows weapons to be seized from someone who's deemed to be a threat.

Now that the case is unsealed, the prosecutor says weapons were confiscated from Aldrich, who tried to reclaim them but did not get them back and it's explained the case was dropped and sealed because family members would not cooperate with investigators.

The report also says Aldridge mentioned becoming the next mass killer before allegedly gunning down five people in a gay nightclub last month.
