Soccer Gets 3D Treatment

Getting ready to see the World Cup as it hasn't been seen before - Live in 3D. These 3D cameras were being trained on a game in Monaco - Host Broadcast Services final dress rehearsal. The television industry believes 3D is the next big thing. HBS's Peter Angell says their job is to tell the story of the match, not to let the technology get in the way.

"We need to tell the story. We need to make sure all elements of the story are told as well as in 3D as they would be in 2D. So that's our No.1 priority. No.2 is to make 3D look good, and to make it safe, and to make it healthy, and to have no one leaving as it is going on, can't watch it any more, that it made me tired, or had some other kind of side effect. "

There is no common standard for 3D TV, or for 3D outside broadcasts. The Sony system used by HBS has seen the creation of a whole new department in the transmission process: Stereographers, who decide where the 3D effect will appear on the screen, and convergence operators, who control the convergence of each pair of cameras. But watching the Monaco game wearing 3D glasses, some journalists weren't convinced the effect worked on all shots.

"I think it'll catch on, maybe in a couple of years. But the technology, they just need to work on it a little bit. But certainly close up, it's brilliant."

"I think close up, the shots are pretty special. But I think once you pan out from the first ages. It's not as effective as anything to 3D, personally."

The 3D film Avatar broke box office records, taking in 2.7 billion U.S. dollars. This fired up enthusiasm in the TV industry that there is a market for the next big thing.

"We have seen it with Avatar in the cinemas. I mean again 15 million people only in France have gone through theaters to see that movie. And that was shot with our own cameras. So we are pretty confident that new sports event, and especially the World Cup, will kick off that whole consumer market. And if our predictions are right, we are expecting ten percent of the whole TV market to be made of 3D TV sets within this calendar year."

25 World Cup games will get the 3D treatment. Coming soon to a brand-new TV or a cinema near you.
