Lionel Messi and Argentina were hoping to earn a place in the round of 8 with a win over Switzerland. With four goals in the group stage, Messi would again lead the attack for the South Americans.

Xherdan Shaqiri, who had a hat-trick in the final match of the group stage, would lead the attack for the Swiss side.

After 90 close minutes, they would need extra time and in the 118th minute, it was Messi time. He burst through the defence, and teed up Angel di Maria for the winner. Argentina are moving on, while Switzerland, who had so many chances, just couldn’t find an equalizer and their World Cup is over.

Belgium 2 - USA 1 (ET)

Argentina would play the winner of Belgium and the USA in the next round. The match also needed an extra session and early in Kevin De Bruyne put Belgium ahead in the 93rd. De Bruyne then set up Romelu Lukaku in the 105th to put this one out of reach.

Julian Green gave the United States a consolation goal before time expired but Belgium was able to see off Jurgen Klinsmann’s USA side 2-1

Argentina and Belgium will meet in Brasilia on Saturday, after completing a Quarter-Final line-up which will feature all eight Group Stage winners, with four teams each from Europe and Latin America. Also on Saturday, the Netherlands take on rank outsiders Costa Rica in Salvador.

Hosts Brazil face Colombia in Fortaleza on Friday, preceded by France against Germany in Rio de Janeiro.
