Chinese Muslims are celebrating the annual Corban Festival. In Beijing, thousands of local Muslims gather at Niujie Mosque, the largest in the capital , to celebrate the important occasion.
Thousands of disciples began their religious rites. Facing west, they pray for a good life in the coming year.
Corban is one of the three major Islamic festivals. It falls on the December 10th on the Islamic calendar.
Though it may look brutal, it is their unique way of celebrating the Corban Festival. It is why the event is also known as the Sacrifice Festival. People slaughter livestock and divide it into three parts. One part is for the family, one for relatives and friends, and the rest for charity.
Wei Chunjie, director of Beijing Niujie Mosque, said, "Today we will slaughter 10 oxe and 60 sheep. It shows that our religious freedom has been fully respected and the improvement of Muslims' living standards."
More than 4,000 local Muslims have come to the Niujie Mosque. For many, this year's festival is even more exciting than before.
Beijing Muslim Ma Zhizhong said, "I have never seen such a scene. I think it is because the teaching of Islam has been broadened and deepened, and many more young Muslims have realized the importance of the festival and livestock slaughter."
Such a celebration may not seem to fit our modern times, but to the Muslims it is a tradition that will be carried on throughout generations.
