Audra Lowe: You guys don’t have to throw your workouts out the window this winter. Better Fitness expert Andrea Metcalf is here to show us some quick and easy ways to stay in shape in the coming chilly months. It’s all in today’s Getting Fit.
Andrea Metcalf: Boy, I’ve got some great winter workout ideas for you. First off, try jumping rope. It doesn’t take a lot of space and because it’s such a high intensity, low impact sport, you only need about ten minutes to blast a couple hundred calories.

The next thing you can do is walking. Yes, walking outside is even better because you’ll burn more calories with the cold. You may even want to try a core balancing shoe like Shape-ups from Skechers. They have a curved bottom which automatically engages your core, a dual density mid-sole which feels cushioning like walking in the sand, and a higher shoe point so that when you walk, you push off, you use more hip extension which means you build a better bottom line.

Now, let’s talk about that holiday shopping when you are going from to store to store. Every time you are waiting in line, I want you think about standing in one leg and getting into that tree pose where you are really balancing working on the core from the ground up, standing on one leg alternating sides depending on which store you are in can really strengthen the hips, the lower body and improve your posture, too.

Another great move is doing push-ups. That can mean at your desk or even in the shower. Remember the push-ups are going to be good for that upper body and great before any of those cocktail parties for the holidays. So work on that upper body good posture.

One more quick move is squats against the wall. You can do this while waiting in the elevator or holding on to your grocery cart. You’ve got to fit exercise in when you can, especially during the holidays when we have very little time. So get out there and go for a walk, pick up the jump rope, or even try some strength moves throughout your day.
