China's domestic box office reached 2.6 billion yuan during the first three months of 2011. Compared to last year, this shows a decline of some 330 million yuan. But take away the 120-million made last year by "Avatar" in the first quarter, and domestic films have in fact seen a year-on-year increase.

11 films took in over 100 million yuan during the first quarter. The two that rolled in more than 200 million yuan are both domestic films. Among the top ten, half are imports while the other half are home made.

The Chinese new year movie season, which arrives along with the Spring Festival holiday, has shown a strong appeal to movie goers. First starting in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the Chinese new year movie season has also become one of the best periods to release a film.

Topping the chart is action film "Shaolin" with a box office of 221 million yuan. It's a remake of one of China's most classic film of the 1980s, "Shaolin Temple" which made Jet Li an overnight sensation.

Running in second place is a sequel of one of the most popular TV dramas "Eternal Moment." The same leads interpret three endings of their romance of the 1990s. Rolling in 203 million yuan, the dramatized possibilities of love had an investment of less than 30 million yuan.

As the temperature rises, the battle on the big screens also warms up. In April, during the three day public holiday of Qingming Festival, movie goers could choose among 14 films that took in 90 million yuan. And more choices are coming as the May Day holiday is just around the corner.
