Agricultural ministers from across Europe have angrily rejected an initial compensation offer by the EU farm chief for farmers who have been suffering huge losses due to the E-coli outbreak.

The ministers are demanding more money for farmers. So far, the vegetable contamination crisis has killed 24 people and infected over 2400.

European Farm Commissioner Dacian Ciolos initially offered up to 150 million euros to compensate struggling farmers, who now have tons of unwanted cucumbers and tomatoes rotting in fields and warehouses. European consumers shun vegetables, fearing they are contaminated with a deadly strain of the E. coli bacteria.

Spanish Agriculture Minister Rosa Aguilar Rivero, said, "The 150 million euros proposed by the commission is completely insufficient, we haven't accepted it, so Spain, and the majority of member states have asked the Agriculture Commissioner to come up with a new proposal that is a substantial increase on the initial offer."

French Agriculture Minister Bruno Le Maire has also expressed his dissatisfaction with the current situation.

He said, "Today the Agriculture commissioner has realized the gravity of the crisis and he has seen the necessity to give compensation to producers and to put on the table a first offer of 150 million Euros. We will not rule out the offer, but this is only a first gesture, a starting point, we now have to measure the losses and compensate them."

EU Agricultural Ministers say European farmers are seeing losses up to 417 million Euros a week so far, and the compensations should make up some of their losses.

The ministers have finally received assurances from Farm Commissioner Dacian Ciolos that he would come back to them and will substantially improve the offer to compensate farmers through June.
