As Greek lawmakers were voting, protesters clashed with riot police outside parliament. Protesters say the austerity package will bring poverty and devastation to the debt-stricken nation.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators are packing Syntagma Square outside parliament. They hope to persuade the government to change its mind about austerity measures, which they say are a bad medicine to solve the debt crisis.

Stelios Kehayias, protester, said, "The new measures are lethal. Their intention is to destroy lower, middle class and working strata and to create a new society, the rich richer, the poor poorer."

Mina Baltzoglou, protester, said, "The new measures, as everybody knows, are very hard for the Greek people. We cannot stand them, we cannot pay, we are not going to pay. That is the message that we are going to send them, to everybody, to the whole of Europe. To the whole world."

Doctors working with the demonstrators say they have treated more than 20 people for minor injuries and nearly 200 people with respiratory problems.

Wednesday's rally comes as a national strike against the austerity package enters its second day. Two Greek unions, representing public and private sector workers, organized the stoppages.

Many flights at Athens International Airport have been cancelled or delayed. The strike halted nearly all public transport and has also hit schools and hospitals bringing central Athens to a standstill.
