Between inflation and higher gas prices, it may come as no surprise that several cities in China are considering fare adjustments.

Guangzhou has held a hearing about its adjustment. Now let’s take a look at how local residents are reacting.

Two proposals are on the table. The first is to adjust the base fare to 9 Yuan, and add a 30 percent service fee on top of the total fare from 10 pm to 6 am. The second scheme proposes hiking the base fare to 10 yuan, and has it cover a greater distance, 2.5km from 2.3 currently. The second also includes a gas levy - which would increase or decrease the fare by one Yuan according to fluctuating fuel prices.

Our reporter spoke with 20 Guangzhou citizens and found out that most are opposed to the first adjustment program.

A Guangzhou citizen said, "An extra 30 percent service fee is hard to accept. I would tend to choose the second option. I would not take a cab at night if I needed to pay the service fee."

The Guangzhou Price Bureau says the first option would help balance income for drivers who work morning and night shifts. It says the second program is more sensitive to volatile fuel prices. However, many taxi drivers say the effectiveness of either option to help raise their income is limited.

A taxi driver from Guangzhou said, "Even if the fuel surcharges are raised from 1 yuan to 2 yuan, if fuel prices continue to rise, it won't help a lot."

Some drivers are also concerned that the higher base fare could lead to the loss of passengers.
