The Hong Kong Book Fair, Asia's best attended book fair, wrapped up on Tuesday. This year, the event not only successfully attracted a crowd much larger than any seen before, but also introduced a revolutionary way of reading.

In one week, the book fair saw a record high 950-thousand attendees. Many brought along empty suitcases planning to take advantage of the vast selection and deep discounts. The average amount purchased by each person is estimated to be 522 HK Dollars.

A big hit at this year's book fair was the Digital Bookstore, where visitors could read e-books by flipping through pages on slimly-designed touch screens.

This might very well be the scene at book fairs of the future, where the venue is no longer packed with rows of book shelves, but with e-book display screens in a vast open area.

Such an idea is welcomed by the vendors at the book fair. What they are experimenting with here is on-demand printing, where people pre-read an e-book before placing an order. Only then is the book printed. The method makes publishing more efficient, which is in exact accordance with market demand. More than 10,000 people tried out the innovation at the Hong Kong book fair.

Chan Tak-chi, executive dir. of Handheld Culture Ltd., said, "This is the book readily available in bookstores, and this is the one we print by the orders people place after they have read the contents on ebooks. By printing to market demand, cost in areas such as logistics, mass production, and stocking, have been significantly reduced."

Digital technology also gives readers some advanced reading capabilities. Book searching is simplified and they can even be customized. Take for example, choosing a cookbook. You can pick a recipe from this Hong Kong style cookbook, then one more from a Sichuan style cookbook. Of course, you can't forget dessert! In this way a personalized cookbook is yours for the making. Just type in the verification code and the book is securely transmitted to your mobile device.

With digital technology, you don't have to be limited by the choices of books in shops. In the future, you can get one tailor-made to your own needs.
