South Korea's Prime Minister, Chung Hong-won, has announced his resignation over the government's handling of the Sewol passenger ferry disaster.

"I was planning to bear responsibility and resign earlier, but I thought responding to the accident was the most urgent priority.

The resignation, which was approved by President Park Geun-hye on Sunday, comes amid criticism by the victims' families that the government did not do enough to rescue or to protect their loved ones.
