China's Dongfeng Race Team edged out overall leaders Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing by just three minutes and 25 seconds to win the stage to Newport, Rhode Island, after thrilling duel over the previous 24 hours as the Volvo Ocean Race wrapped up leg six on Wednesday.

Dongfeng had started the previous stage as joint race-leaders, and were close with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing even 30 nautical miles from the finish.

But Dongfeng held on to secure victory in a time of 17 days, nine hours and three minutes exactly.

Wednesday's victory in the 5,010-nautical mile stage has cut the deficit to the Emirati boat to six points and leaves Dongfeng with a good chance of overall race victory with three stages remaining.

Dutch challengers Team Brunel finished just over 55 minutes after Dongfeng to claim the final podium spot with MAPFRE fourth.

The boats will now have 10 days in dock in Newport for maintenance, before returning to the offshore action with the trans-Atlantic leg to Lisbon, Portugal.

Following that are two legs to France and Sweden before the event concludes on June 27th in Gothenburg.
