欧足联9月选举新掌门人
The UEFA Executive Committee were meeting on Wednesday ahead of the Europa League final. According to the conference, the European football governing body will elect a new president on September 14th to replace disgraced Michel Platini. And there were more bad news for the French football legend, as Platini could be barred from attending Euro 2016 in an official capacity.
"Perhaps we might wish to invite him because, don't forget, he was the first scorer of this tournament. And the first scorer of the tournament's history. But, for us, again - we have to clarify exactly what are our rights and what we can do and what we cannot do. We are not here to violate any decision or violate any FIFA regulations," Interim UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis said.
UEFA has been without a president since Platini was suspended by the FIFA ethics committee in October. His right to attend Euro 2016 as a guest of UEFA is still unclear despite FIFA being asked to explain the exact terms of his sanction.
The race to become Platini's successor, however, has already begun. Spanish football federation chief Angel Maria Villar is reported to be in the running. Michael van Praag, the long-time president of the Dutch Football Association, is also a candidate.
Portugal's FA chief Fernando Gomes, and Slovenian FA President Aleksander Ceferinis, will also reportedly bid to succeed Platini. The 55 national federations in UEFA will vote at an extraordinary congress in Athens on September 14th.
