【讲解】

盐(salt〉在古时是十分珍贵之物。除用于调味和防腐之外,希腊人、罗马人和犹太人还用于祭祀。盐素来被视作圣洁的象征。中世纪英国的王公贵族及一般富有人家都将盐装在一个精美的银制大盐罐内。按当时习俗盐罐摆在长方餐桌中间，同桌的贵客坐在离主人最近的席位上，即坐在盐罐上首,此所谓above the salt。其反义语即 below the salt,这 两个成语多与动词sit连用。
