C: A friend told me that detective stories are a good way of learning English. Do you agree?
C: 一个朋友跟我说看侦探小说是学习英语的一种好方法。你同意吗?

E: Yes I do because they are interesting and they also make you think about puzzles and how to solve them.
E:是的,我同意,因为这些小说很有意思,也会促使你思考难题,想着如何去解决问题。

C: So in that case which detective stories would you recommend?
C:那你会推荐哪些侦探小说呢?

E: Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle are much loved here in China.
E:阿瑟-柯南道尔写的歇洛克·幅尔摩斯的故事,在中国很受欢迎。

C: Why is that?
C:为什么?

E: Maybe because he is an original character and because he is able to tell from one look exacdy whar a person does for a job.
E:也许是因为福尔摩斯是个原创人物,还因为他具备只看一眼就能判断出一个人的职业的能力。

C: So he uses observation and his intellect to solve crimes?
C:所以他是通过观察和智慧来破案r?

E: That's right. As he says in one of his films "Elementary, my dear Watson" as he solves another crime.

C: Are there any other famous sayings by him7

E: "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, whatever remains, however improbable. must be the truth. "

E: The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes would be a good place to stan.

C: He lived in London during the late 19th century?
C:福尔摩斯生活在19世纪末的伦敦,对吗?

E: His address was 221B Baker Street but that number does not actually exist. There is a bank at number 221 and any letters that you send to 221B will automatically go there as they have created that special address for Sherlock Homes fans all around the world.
E:他的住址是贝克街22IB号,实际上这个号牌是不存在的。221号是家银行,任何寄到221B的信件都会自动送到银行那里,因为他们为全世界的歇洛克·福尔摩斯迷们编造了那个特别的地址。

C: Can you tell me anything interesting about Sherlock Holmes.

E: Well he smoked a pipe and wore a deerstalker hat and sometimes took the drug cocaine althoug at that time it was not illegal in England.
E:哦,他常抽着烟斗,戴一顶猎帽,有时候吸可卡因,尽管那在当时的英国并不违法。

C: He sounds like a typical eccentric English gendeman.
C:听起来他好像足个典型的英国古怪绅士。

E: Someone said that the funniest joke in the world involves him.
E:有人说世界上最滑稽的笑话都跟他有关。

C: Oh, what was that?
C:哦,是什么笑话?

E: He was camping in a tent with his friend Dr. Watson. It was late at night and Holmes asked him to look up and tell him what he saw. Watson said, "Well. I see thousands of stars. " "And what does that mean to you?" asked Holmes. "Well, I guess it means we will have another nice day tomorrow. What does it mean to you, Holmes?" "To me. It means someone has stolen our tent. "

【背景介绍】

歇洛克·福尔摩斯(Sherlock Holmes,又译作夏洛克·福尔摩斯),是一个由19世纪末的英国侦探小说家亚瑟·柯南·道尔所塑造的一个才华横溢的虚构侦探。福尔摩斯自己称自己是一名“咨询侦探”,也就是说当其他私人或官方侦探遇到困难时常常向他求救。故事透露福尔摩斯经常能够足不出户就可以解决很多疑难问题,但是大部分故事都集中讲述一些比较困难、需要福尔摩斯出门调查的案子。福尔摩斯善于通过观察与演绎法来解决问题。柯南·道尔是从自己见习于爱丁堡皇家医院时一名善于观察的老师的身上获得灵感,创造了福尔摩斯这一人物的。
