G: This is the Kimono House. Look, there are many differenr designs and colours. In Japan, men, women and children all wear different types of kimono. It also depends on the time of year, fur example in the spring, women can wear a kimono depicting scenes of blossoms or birds, but this design could never be wom during the winter.

T: So, was this a strict rule? I mean. for everyone?

G: For Geisha especially. There was a Geisha Registry that controlled what kimono was wom at what time.

G: That is an obi, An obi is tied around the waist, on top of che kimono. Obi are often very heavy and can come fiom the hips all the way up to the shoulder blades. They are often more beautiful than the kimono itself.

T: Everything looks so big! But I always think ofjapanese people, especially women, as being small. How do they get dressed:l

G: People often employed dressers. who helped to fit the kimono and obi The kimono is the same size, no matter how small the lady is. It's a dimcult process and almost impossible to do alone. As you can see. the obi is tied at the back, so someone must assist the kimono wearer while they are dressing.

T: This kimono is diff-erent. The sleeves are so long! It looks like they would drag on the ground. Who would wear a kimono like this?

G: This is one of the most elaborate kimono designs, which is only wom by anapprentice Geisha. As you can see. the colors are brighter, the flower design is much more detailed, the sleeves are longer and the obi is made of a heavier fabric.
G:这件是图案最精致的和服之一,只有艺伎学徒才能穿,你看颜色比较鲜艳,花的图案也较细致,袖子很长,而且腰带是用比较厚的织物做成的。
T: Yes, I can see. It must be difficult to stand with so much extra weight wrapped around your body.
T:是的,我能看出来二那么重的衣服裹在身上一定很难受:、
G: The kimono and obi of an apprentice is very difficult to wear. Very heavy , which makes it difficult to walk in. But it does look really beautiful.
G:学徒的和服和腰带是很不好穿的。非常重,所以走起路米也很困难。但是看起来真的很漂亮。

【背景介绍】
和服(わふく,wafuku) ,明治维新以前称为吴服,语出《古事记》、《日本书纪》、《松窗梦语》,源于三国时东吴通过商贸活动将纺织品和缝纫技艺传入日本,由中国的汉服发展而来。20世纪初国族主义传入日本,“日本民族”的概念兴起,因而改称和服,成为大和民族的传统民族服饰。而与这个词相对的是洋服(ようふく),指来自西洋的衣饰。可分为公家着物和武家着物。
在日本,出席冠礼(成人式)、婚礼、葬礼、祭礼、剑道、弓道、棋道、茶道、花道、卒业式、宴会、雅乐、文艺演出、庆祝传统节日,日本人都会穿上端庄的和服去参加。和服承载了近30项关于染织技艺的日本重要无形文化财。制作和服的越后上布·小千谷缩以及结城更是录入了世界非物质文化遗产。
