5.1 Olympic Games 奥运会

M: I'll participate in a quiz about the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing. It will be held tonight. Will you come?
M：我要参加一个知识竞赛，是关于北京举办第29届奥运会的，就在今晚举行，你来吗？

W: Sure. What do you know about the Olympic Games on the past? For example, do you know where and when the first Olympic Games were held in the ancient times?
W：当然了，你对过去的奥运会有了解吗？比如：你知道古时候第一届奥运会是在哪里、在什么地方举办的吗？

M: It was held in 776 B.C. at Olympia. It also has a long history of more than 2700 years.

M：公元前776年在希腊的奥林匹亚举办的。它已经有2700多年的历史了。

W: Haven't the Olympics been stopped for a long time?
W：奥运会就没有停过一段时间吗？

M: Yes, there were no games in 1916, 1940 and 1944, because of World War 1 and World War 2.

M：停过，在1916年、1940年和1944年停过，因为第一次世界大战和第二次世界大战而没有比赛。

W: I see. Look, do you know what that emblem means? I've seen it so many times, but I don't know what it stands for.
W：我知道了。看，你知道那个徽章表示什么吗？我已经见过好几次了，但我不知道它代表什么。

M: Oh, it's the Beijing 2008 Olympics’ Emblem. It's a Chinese seal, meaning that Chinese people warmly welcome the friends from all over the world.
M：哦，那是北京2008奥运会的标志，它是一个中国印，意思是说中国人民热情欢迎来自世界各地的朋友。

W: I see. I believe there will be lots of foreigners coming to Beijing to watch the Games.
W：我明白了，我相信会有很多外国人来北京观看奥运会的。

M: Sure.

M：肯定会的。
