President Joe Biden is at the National Interagency Fire Center in Idaho, where he's drumming up support for his $3.5 trillion spending plan. Later, Biden heads to California where he will campaign for Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who faces a recall vote on Tuesday.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is defending the Biden administration's much-criticized handling of the military withdrawal from Afghanistan. The State Department has come under fire for not doing enough to get Americans and others out of the country before the Taliban took control.

Tropical Storm Nicholas is gathering strength and threatening to blow ashore on the Texas Gulf Coast as a hurricane. The storm could bring up to 20 inches of rain to the same area hit by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Classroom doors are swinging open for about a million New York City public school students. It's the nation's largest experiment of in-person learning during the coronavirus pandemic.
