President Donald Trump's arrival in France to take part in events commemorating the end of World War I has been characterized by a stinging rebuke by the country's President Emmanuel Macron. Mr. Trump said his French counterpart has been insulting by suggesting that Europe needed to protect itself from America. On Tuesday, President Macron called for a European army to protect it with respect to China, Russia and even the United States.

Wildfires burning out of control in the US state of California have killed at least 5 people. The deaths occurred in Butte County when 80-square-kilometer blaze is raging. Tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes.

US officials say the gunman who shot dead 12 people at a bar in California on Wednesday posted on social media during his attack before killing himself. Ian David Long posted remarks about his mental state on Instagram and Facebook.

Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena has dissolved parliament and announced a snap election in an apparent attempt to avoid the damaging parliament vote next week. The election will take place on the 15th of January. It's the latest twist in a political crisis which erupted last month when the president tried to replace the prime minister.

The president of Bulgaria Rumen Radev has warned that democracy is under threat in his own country. In a televised speech criticizing the two-year-old right-wing government led by Boyko Borisov, he said the freedom won by Bulgarians after the collapse of communism were now only a memory.

The European Union is to compensate farmers in full for any damage caused by growing numbers of protected species, including lynxes, wolves and bears. Farmers have protested that the growing number of wild carnivores posed a threat to livestock.
